Escape to The Last Threshold

We're building a castle in a housing crisis.

We're Az and Lou- the queer artist duo who fled our countries of origin seeking safety and freedom to be together as ourselves in Canada. We're persuing our plans for a sustainable, permanent creative refuge even though our move has gone insanely off the rails. You can watch the docu-series on Azrai's YouTube channel, or read more about the story and project below.

To build a Storybook Inn, first we have to get out of the woods. Here's how to make that happen:
For dauntless allies who want to be part of the rescue party by helping us win the medical, immigration and housing fights.
For steadfast allies who are in it for the long haul and want to actually build a castle in a housing crisis.
Stay updated (once or twice a month) so you don't miss new videos, progress on this journey, or the side-projects that help us get there.
When we're ready to bring people onto the Storybook Inn project- here's where we'll make the call.

Our current reality: We’re Trystan (artist name: Azrai) & Lou, the queer artist duo behind StarWhispers, Asunderland, and now: Escape to The Last Threshold. Unsafe housing, immigration crackdowns, and medical malpractice have trapped us deep in survival mode. Until recently, we were living full time in Airbnbs.
Right now we are in the process fundraising to apply for Canadian citizenship by descent, which will provide a huge amount of relief and stability, not to mention healthcare. This will also allow us to work- as we are legally prohibited from working in Canada without the proper status. We are also pursuing justice for both the medical malpractice and improper eviction, which will help us regain financial stability. We are currently in safe, temporary housing until around November 2026 and need to secure:
  • Urgent medical care
  • Daily living expenses (Food, coffee, toothpaste)
  • Long-term housing, even non-traditional options like an RV
  • Legal assistance for immigration and dental malpractice cases

Concept Art Gallery:

Illustrated concept of the Living Storybook Manor. A tall blue-roofed inn with glowing golden windows is wrapped in vines and blossoms. A glass conservatory extends from the side, while winding lantern-lit paths connect to a market square, hydroponic gardens, and stone archways.
The Living Storybook Inn- an example of what we are planning and the heart of the dream. Accessible, twinkling garden paths, heavy theming, lanterns leading to markets, grottos, and workshops. This is what we see when we talk about building a permanent refuge: a home where stories are lived, not just told.
Illustrated isometric view of a Victorian-style house with a steep red roof, beige walls, and tall windows. The house is surrounded by greenery and sits along a dirt path, drawn in a soft, painterly style.
The “before” building. This is a real property listing illustrated by Trystan, showing the kind of blank canvas we could transform into a Living Storybook Inn.
Concept art of “the Skimpus,” a fantastical otter-like creature with fin-like appendages and colorful spines, shown inside an ornate terrarium filled with greenery and branches
Meet the Skimpus, our would-be inn mascot. Mischievous, otherworldly, and a little too curious for his own good. He’ll inhabit the space through puppetry, simple animatronics, stuffed animals and lore, greeting visitors like he already owns the place.
Illustrated concept of a night market lit by glowing lanterns and strings of lights. Rows of vendor tents and stalls line a grassy path, with warm candlelight inside. A sign reads “Night Market - All magical folk welcome.”
Lou’s vision of the Night Market. Glowing lanterns, vendor stalls, and a sign that welcomes “all magical folk.” We’d build the booths and caravans ourselves and invite local artisans to sell their wares, whether for a Christmas market, summer fair, or a midnight bazaar.
Concept art of a collapsible wooden vendor booth with green-and-white striped canopy. The booth has lattice panels, fold-down counter, and a sign labeled “Threshold Trinketry.” Two views show the counter open and closed.
Lou’s design for one of the Night Market booths. Foldable, themed vendor stalls so every seller starts on the same footing. Portable enough to pack up, magical enough to feel like part of the world. A way to make markets look like storybook pages come to life.
Concept art of large glowing lanterns shaped like geometric tents, framed with natural looking wooden sticks. Three lanterns rest on the ground in a glowing cluster, while additional sketches show their individual designs.
Lantern concept for the Night Market. Tall, glowing lights made from cloth and wooden frames. These would be built in a variety of sizes with safe lighting, large enough to mark paths and gathering spots. Lanterns like these do heavy lifting by adding a warm magical glow to the market grounds.
Black-and-white sketch of three rune-carved standing stones beneath a bent, wind-swept tree. The stones have spiral and circular carvings, with holes through their centers, set in a small garden mound.
Lou’s sketch of “founder’s rune” stones - a garden feature concept to honor the supporters who helped make the Storybook Inn possible.
Digital painting of a tall rune stone with a circular hole near the top, carved with swirling spiral patterns. Green moss and grass grow at its base and in crevices of the stone.
Trystan’s detail concept of a “founder’s rune” stone, designed to honor supporters. Each stone would feature markings and spirals made up of founder's runes, as part of the Storybook Inn’s living lore. Like a huge, collective spell of goodwill cast over the entire property.
Concept art titled “Dryad Grotto.” A circular floor plan and sketches of a vine-covered hill conceal a glowing dryad figure. The scene includes a bioluminescent grotto with plants, waterfalls, glowing runes, and an aquaponic tank window showing fish.
The Dryad Grotto- a living garden space that can hide inside a hillside. Part aquaponic garden, part story encounter, with a Dryad who “wakes up” when the right conditions are met. Can be made big enough for a class, small enough for a solo encounter.

The Goal - Chapters 1 & 2

Chapter 1 – $26,000 CAD - COMPLETED!

This goal covered escape from the Moldlord's rental, a storage unit to save our belongings, bnbs to survive eviction, urgent medical bills, and introductory legal costs tied to malpractice.

Chapter 2 – $102,000 CAD total

his goal covers the full mid-term medical and legal costs, as well as and the purchase / refurbishment of an RV for interim safe housing. This amount gets us healthy, immigrated and out of temporary housing so we can build our bigger dream.

This GoFundMe directly covers costs like:

  • Monthly costs such as our storage unit keeping our belongings safe,
  • Groceries, uninsured medications, car insurance and maintenance, keeping our artwork and business online.
  • $3,500.00 medical debt
  • $17,000.00 in immigration legal fees
  • $7-10,000.00 in malpractice legal fees
  • $15,000.00 in emergency malpractice-related costs (emergency dental work, hospital visits, surgery to remove the dental spike)
  • $15-35k to purchased a move-in ready, used RV.
  • $30-50k overall remodel of camper/RV for sustainable living

Next Chapter:  Purchase and theming of a Storybook Inn.

But first, a few more details:
Costs we had no way of predicting have piled up to a point that we cannot unbury ourselves, such as; new immigration policies and financial requirements. Or the fact that predatory landlords have repeatedly demanded a deposit of at least $14,000.00 (6+ months of rent) upfront, illegally, because of our immigrant status and lack of Canadian credit history. Regardless of proof of income. (We are in a poor position to negotiate or enforce our rights as we have been turned away from even viewing properties due to our immigrant status, and landlords are known to look up tribunal/legal records of prospective tenants.)

A dentist gave Trystan extensive dental injuries shortly after arriving in Canada. These have severely impacted his ability to work- work which his original immigration path depended upon entirely. These injuries alone will cost at least $50,000 CAD to treat. We are barred from healthcare access, due to the impacts of this on our original work-related immigration path. This lack of healthcare also keeps costs of even our regular medications for ADHD and hormone therapy in the hundreds per month. These are just a few pieces of the pileup.
Being able to make it through this rough patch and pay the associated legal costs opens much needed doors for us.

This is the foundation that allows us to begin what we’re really working toward: a permanent refuge and community art space, wherever we're able to build it, documented and shared through our series. That's the next chapter for us.

Note: Some of these pictured restorations have already been re-treated, however these defective restorations span Trystan's entire mouth. And the "sinus spike," pictured remains permanently embedded in his maxillary sinuses from the ordeal, causing ongoing medical issues yet to be fully understood.)

The Vision

Help to secure our immediate safety, and you also help seed a lasting refuge for queer art and community.
As immigrants, we can’t legally buy residential property yet- even with valid visas. However, that changes if Trystan's citizenship application is honored. The Living Storybook Inn provides both permanent housing for Trystan and Lou, and artist residencies for marginalized creatives, keeping more money out of landlord's pockets forever.

But beyond that, the plan is structured to host roleplay events, themed balls, weddings, local artisan markets, educational and cultural workshops- all in a home that no landlord can touch. It's a queer-led fairytale retreat, a refuge, a photo/film studio and community site rolled into one obsessively themed space. And always at the heart of it; no strings attached, free stays to artists and queer folks in need. The camper we're fundraising for (and theming) in the first chapters aims to be the first of these free-stay spaces.

And every supporter becomes part of the story- literally. Supporter names become Founder's Runes, which are physically incorporated into whatever space we settle on. Like a gigantic protective spell hidden in plain sight, sprawled across the property.
A Founder’s Rune at the future property is your name and chosen rune, permanently carved, burned, sculpted or otherwise incorporated physically into a real space of the refuge itself. When you give to the fundraiser, or one of our Patreons, you'll get a link to a form where you can give your details.
