The music? Gorgeous. The costumes? Leveled-up (Bryce ate us alive in HolyClothing- and btw I actually designed HolyClothing’s new masc clothing line no big deal or anything- but seeing their work on stage was pretty cool.)
And.... the PUPPETS. Flawless. Perfect. One-of-a-kind. Brilliant. I might be cosplaying a frog man in the future when our lives allow it. As someone who’s spent an inordinate amount of time talking about how media like The Dark Crystal changed fantasy and ME forever (watch Ye Olde Puppet video here), seeing that level of craft live on stage from artists I've been following for years made my little theatre-nerd heart explode. SPOILER WARNING - you may want to skip this if you haven’t seen the show. In the Starkid rendition, Ella Ashmore is resurrected when her magic slippers are put back on her dead, stolen feet- hacked off by her troll stepmother and worn by her troll stepsister. (Incredible characters btw.) In this fan piece, I imagined Ella returning with prosthetic feet to replace the stolen ones- made of starlight. To me, that twist would have supercharged the “Magic is MY ally, not yours,” callback moment, by making the goddesses’ gift a statement with permanence. I really thought this was where the story was going, so when that scene unfolded differently, I waited very patiently until the show ended and then actually yelled, “But WHERE were her prosthetic starlight FEETS??” …and then I became posessed and drew them. I love, love, LOVE this show. This is just my shiny little “what if?”
